English at Prefleuri is topic based and taught using novels with the view to inspire and interest the children. Emphasis is placed on both the discussion and the formation of individual opinions in response to reading, as well as the development of creative and technical writing skills.
We use high quality texts to enrich the children’s vocabulary and literary experience. Using these texts we teach grammar, spelling, and punctuation following the English National Curriculum (2014) and phonics are taught to support the children’s ability to read and spell.
We aim to instil in children a love of reading and appreciation of English literature, coupled with the ability to express themselves imaginatively, eloquently and accurately. Teachers create lessons that are sequenced and progressive to ensure they build upon prior knowledge, develop links and identify the relationships within the subject. Opportunities are provided where children can communicate their ideas and secure their understanding.
